Microwave Repair in Buffalo, NY

Built-in, over-the-range and drawer microwaves are wired, vented and trimmed into your kitchen, so replacing one is rarely a simple swap. Elevate Repair diagnoses and repairs installed microwaves and wall oven/microwave combination units across Buffalo and Western New York, with a $99 service call that is applied toward the repair.

Microwaves We Repair

We focus on installed microwaves — the units that are built into your cabinets, mounted over your range or paired with a wall oven, where a repair is almost always better value than a replacement.

Repair or Replace? An Honest Answer

An installed microwave is usually worth repairing. Replacing one means matching the cabinet cutout or mounting plate, the trim kit and the venting — and often the finish of the range or wall oven beside it. A new built-in, drawer or combination unit typically costs far more than replacing a failed magnetron, door switch, control board or vent fan motor.

Inexpensive countertop microwaves are different. When a basic countertop model fails, the service call plus parts can cost as much as a new microwave, so replacing it is normally the better value and we will not push a repair that does not make sense. We do service higher-end countertop and inverter models. If you are unsure, call (716) 271-5114 with the model number before booking and we will help you decide.

Common Microwave Problems We Fix

  • Not heating — the microwave runs and the turntable turns, but food stays cold. Usually a fault in the high-voltage circuit: magnetron, high-voltage diode, capacitor, transformer or high-voltage fuse (on inverter models, often the inverter board), and sometimes a door interlock switch.
  • Won't start or completely dead — a blown line fuse, failed door switch, tripped thermal cutout or control board fault. On built-in units we also check the power supply and the connection behind the trim kit.
  • Sparking or arcing inside — a damaged waveguide cover, chipped cavity paint or a worn rack support. Stop using the microwave until it has been inspected.
  • Door or latch problems — broken latch hooks, misaligned door switches or worn hinges. A microwave is designed not to run unless its door interlocks close correctly, and that safety system should never be bypassed.
  • Keypad or control problems — unresponsive keys, a blank or flickering display, or error codes, traced to the touchpad membrane or the control board.
  • Turntable not turning — a failed turntable motor, a broken coupler or a worn roller guide.
  • Intermittent heating — heats on some cycles but not others, often a weakening magnetron, a thermal cutout opening early or an intermittent door switch.
  • Unusual noise — a loud hum or buzz from the high-voltage components, grinding from the turntable motor, or a noisy cooling fan or vent fan.
  • Vent fan or cooktop light not working — on over-the-range models, the fan motor, switch, light socket or control board.
  • Trips the breaker or loses power — a breaker that trips when the microwave starts usually points to a short in the high-voltage section (capacitor, diode, magnetron or transformer). Intermittent power loss or a control error on a built-in unit is traced to the control board, a fuse or the wiring connection behind the trim kit.

A safety note: do not open a microwave cabinet yourself. The high-voltage capacitor can hold a dangerous charge even after the microwave is unplugged. Our technicians discharge and test the high-voltage system before working on it.

Before Your Appointment

  • Find the model number. It is usually on a label inside the door frame or on the cavity wall. Having it when you book helps the technician bring the right parts.
  • Note what the microwave does. Does the light come on, does the turntable turn, does the vent fan run, is there an error code? These details narrow the fault quickly.
  • Stop using it if it sparks, smells burnt or trips the breaker. Leave it switched off at the breaker if the breaker trips again when reset.
  • Clear the area. For an over-the-range microwave, keep the cooktop below clear; for a built-in unit, make sure the cabinet around it is accessible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it worth repairing a built-in or over-the-range microwave?

In most cases, yes. Replacing an installed microwave means matching the cabinet cutout or mounting plate, the trim kit and the venting, and the new unit usually costs far more than the repair. A failed magnetron, door switch, control board or vent fan can normally be replaced and the microwave put back into service.

Should I repair an inexpensive countertop microwave?

Usually not. For a basic countertop model, the service call plus parts can cost as much as a new microwave, so replacing it is normally the better value. We do service higher-end countertop and inverter models where a repair makes sense. If you are unsure, call with the model number before booking and we will help you decide.

How much does microwave repair cost in Buffalo?

Microwave repair uses our standard residential pricing. The $99 service call covers the visit and diagnosis and is applied toward the repair if you proceed. You get a quote for parts and labor before any work begins, and booking online saves $25 on a completed repair.

My microwave runs but does not heat. Can I keep using it?

Stop using it until it has been checked. A microwave that runs without heating usually has a fault in the high-voltage circuit, such as the magnetron, high-voltage diode, capacitor or fuse. Do not open the cabinet yourself: the high-voltage capacitor can hold a dangerous charge even after the microwave is unplugged.

Do you need to remove a built-in or over-the-range microwave to repair it?

Sometimes. Many repairs can be made with the microwave in place, while others require taking it off its mounting plate or out of its trim kit. When that is needed, the technician removes and reinstalls the unit as part of the repair.

Which microwave brands do you repair?

We service microwaves from GE, Whirlpool, Samsung, LG, KitchenAid, Maytag and Panasonic. If you have a different brand, call with the model number and we will tell you whether we can help.
