The short answer
Diagnose first. A refrigerator that is warm, noisy or leaking usually has one failed part behind it, and a single part on an otherwise sound refrigerator is normally worth repairing.
Our $99 service call fee covers the diagnosis. You get the exact repair price after diagnosis, before any work begins, and you compare that number with the price of a comparable new refrigerator. If the diagnosis points the other way, we tell you.
Repair vs. replace at a glance
| Factor | Repair | Replace |
|---|---|---|
| Cost to find out | $99 service call, which covers the diagnosis. | The price of a comparable new refrigerator. |
| What the price is based on | The part that failed and the labor to replace it, quoted after diagnosis and before any work begins. | The model you choose: size, features and finish set the price, not the fault. |
| Installation and fit | The refrigerator stays in its cutout with its water line, finish and handles unchanged. | A new unit has to fit the cutout, the doorway and the water line; built-in, counter-depth and French-door models are the hardest to match. |
| How many major parts have failed | One failed part on an otherwise sound refrigerator is a normal repair. | Several major components failing at the same time make a repair harder to justify. |
| Parts availability | A part we can get is a repair we can quote. | Parts that are discontinued or on a long backorder tip the decision toward replacing. |
| Warranty | 60-day parts and labor warranty on the completed repair. | Whatever warranty comes with the new unit. |
What to weigh before you decide
- What failed. One part (a defrost heater or thermostat, a fan motor, a start relay, a door gasket or a water valve) is the normal case. Several major components at once is not.
- Food at risk. A refrigerator that has stopped cooling needs a decision today. Book the diagnosis, then decide with the quote in hand instead of guessing.
- Fit. Built-in, counter-depth and French-door models are matched to a kitchen cutout and a water line. A replacement has to fit the same space.
- The quote against the price of a comparable new refrigerator. We give you the exact repair price after diagnosis so the comparison is real.
- Parts availability for your model. Discontinued parts or a long backorder change the answer.
Usually worth diagnosing and repairing
These are the everyday refrigerator repairs: one failed part, replaced on site, with the refrigerator staying where it is.
- A refrigerator not cooling while the compressor runs: usually a defrost heater or defrost thermostat, an evaporator or condenser fan motor, a damper or a temperature sensor.
- A failed compressor start relay or capacitor on an otherwise sound refrigerator.
- A fridge leaking water or water under the crisper drawers: a defrost drain tube, a water inlet valve or a filter housing.
- An ice maker not making ice or a water dispenser not working on a refrigerator that otherwise works. See also ice maker repair in Buffalo.
- A freezer not freezing while the fresh-food side holds temperature. See also freezer repair in Buffalo.
- A fridge making noise from a fan motor, or a door gasket, hinge, crisper track or leveling problem.
- A built-in, counter-depth or French-door model that fits your kitchen cutout.
When replacement may make more sense
- Several major components are failing at the same time.
- The repair quote comes close to the price of a comparable new refrigerator.
- Parts for your model are discontinued or on a long backorder.
If the diagnosis points to the sealed system (the compressor and refrigerant circuit), we explain what we found and what your options are before anything is quoted or done. Either way, you decide with the facts in front of you.
