The short answer
Diagnose first. A washer that leaks, will not drain or will not spin normally has one failed part behind it, and that is usually a one-visit fix on a machine whose tub, motor and drum are sound.
Our $99 service call fee covers the diagnosis. You get the exact repair price after diagnosis, before any work begins. The decision gets a closer look when the repair falls into the Major teardown repairs group, where the tub and drum have to come apart.
Repair vs. replace at a glance
| Factor | Repair | Replace |
|---|---|---|
| Cost to find out | $99 service call, which covers the diagnosis. | The price of a comparable new washer. |
| What the price is based on | The part that failed and the labor to replace it, quoted after diagnosis and before any work begins. | The model you choose: size, features and finish set the price, not the fault. |
| Installation and fit | The washer stays on its hoses, drain and outlet; a front-load or top-load machine is repaired in place. | A new washer has to fit the space, the door swing and the hookups; a stacked pair or a tight laundry closet limits the choice. |
| How many major parts have failed | One failed part on an otherwise sound washer is a normal repair. | Several major components failing at the same time make a repair harder to justify. |
| Parts availability | A part we can get is a repair we can quote. | Parts that are discontinued or on a long backorder tip the decision toward replacing. |
| Warranty | 60-day parts and labor warranty on the completed repair. | Whatever warranty comes with the new unit. |
What to weigh before you decide
- What failed. A lid switch or door lock, drain pump, inlet valve, belt or shock absorbers is one part. The tub bearing, motor and control board failing together is a different situation.
- Which repair group it falls into. Controls & sensors and Parts & mechanical repairs are the everyday fixes. Major teardown repairs (tub bearing, spider arm, tub seal) mean the tub and drum come apart, and that is where we compare the quote with you.
- The condition of the rest of the machine. A sound tub, motor and drum on a front-load or top-load washer make a single-part repair worthwhile.
- The quote against the price of a comparable new washer. We give you the exact repair price after diagnosis so the comparison is real.
- Parts availability for your model. Discontinued parts or a long backorder change the answer.
Usually worth diagnosing and repairing
These are the everyday washer repairs: one failed part, replaced on site, normally in a single visit.
- A washer leaking water: a front-load door boot gasket, a drain hose or a water inlet valve.
- A washer that won't drain: a drain pump or a coin trap and drain filter.
- A washer that won't spin or won't start: a lid switch or door lock, a motor coupling, a drive belt, a shift actuator or a clutch assembly.
- A washer not filling: a water inlet valve or a water level (pressure) switch.
- A washer shaking or vibrating: shock absorbers on a front-load or suspension rods on a top-load machine.
- A timer, main control board or touchpad board on a machine whose tub, motor and drum are sound.
When replacement may make more sense
- The tub bearing, motor and control board are failing together.
- The repair quote comes close to the price of a comparable new washer.
- Parts for your model are discontinued or on a long backorder.
The Major teardown repairs group (tub bearing, spider arm, tub seal) is the decision point. The tub and drum have to come apart for those jobs, so when the diagnosis lands there we put the quote next to the price of a comparable new washer with you before anything is done.
